Jessica Verday on “How do you feel about stuff like sex scenes in books? Inappropriate or okay?”

I think it depends on the context of the book, the characters themselves (whether or not a sex scene molds a character’s thoughts/actions in some way), and the age of your intended reader. I feel a bit squeamish at the thought of a sex scene being read by a fourth or fifth grader, but obviously older readers can handle more mature (and true to life) imagery.

Jessica Verday on “If you could have any super power, what would it be?”

I’d love to have X-Ray vision. Not that I’m so much interested in viewing people without their clothes, but can you imagine everything you could find? Buried a jar of quarters in your backyard? Found! Wondering what’s really buried out in the Sahara? Wonder no more! From helping police locate missing bodies, to excavating historical digs with just a peep. That would be one awesome super power to have.

Jessica Verday on “What was the first thing you wrote?”

The first official story I started and finished was called Bobby’s Bazillion Bananas. I was maybe 11? 12? when I wrote it and sadly, lost my only copy. It was about a boy who loves bananas so much that he buries one in his backyard and overnight it grows into a banana tree. There are – you guessed – a bazillion bananas, so he fills up his wagon and delivers some to all of his friends.
