Ellen Hopkins on “When you’re writing a book and making up characters, do you feel like you become that character, as well as that character becomes a part of you?”

My characters are very real to me. It’s not so much that I become them than that I channel them. They talk to me. Tell me their stories. Sometimes they even wake me up and insist I get up and go write what they’re telling me. That’s really annoying, especially at 5 a.m.

  1. Ellen, I love this answer. That’s *exactly* it.

    And yeah, it IS annoying.

I like your answer. I know how Crank is a personal connection to the story. I think it was your daughter you said in your dedication, or a insert. I’m not sure, I haven’t read it in a few months. Though I’ve read all of your books many times. I like how Kristina/Bre is so realistic, and how in ways I can connect. Minus you know, the drugs & sex & baby. Being as I’m 16.
I’m excited to get a copy of Tricks, Right now I’m trying to finish Peeps by Scott Westerfeld, another favorite of mine.
I love Identical, that twist was perfection
