L.J. Smith on “If you could have any super power, what would it be?”

Well, I’m sort of trapped here because I can’t choose between two.  I would like to be both 1) endowed with super strength and 2) a healer.  It might seem that these serve two completely different purposes, but they’re connected in a way.

The strength part is so that I would never again feel intimidated by anyone or anything.  As it is, I’m a wimp.  I’m not a black belt in karate, I don’t know tae kwon do, oki doki, or deja fu, I’m strongly pro-gun control (and I certainly can’t shoot), and I know I would forget everything I’ve learned in self-defense lessons if an angry lion was trying to climb inside my window (don’t laugh; I saw the video of this happening!).  But if I had super-strength, I wouldn’t be afraid to walk the streets of San Francisco at night.  I would run around, saving the weak and innocent from the strong and evil, and I would also ensure that the villains weren’t killed, just held for trial.

But then I would also want to heal anyone who’d been wounded, even using my life force if necessary.  I can’t think of anything sweeter than that: to heal the good guys, while the bad guys sit around trussed up at my feet like Thanksgiving turkeys.  Put it this way: if I could prevent injury to innocent people, I’d give up my healing power in order to save the innocent with super strength.  If I couldn’t stop violence or accidents from harming people, I’d give up anything to be a healer, and I’d cure as many people as possible.  I could even go from hospital to hospital, curing patients.  Yes, I think healing wins out over strength in the end.

Healing is a cool power its just like Rob’s in dark visions. :) wish i had a cool superpower. Anyways love your books and can’t wait to read strange fate and shadow souls. Will i be able to read the first chapter of shadow souls anytime? Damon, Nick, Rob, Elena, Poppy, and Keller are my favorite charecters :D

I agree with the healing power! That would be so great. To go around and help the people that are seriously in need, from army men and women to people that have a cut on their leg. It would be so magical to be able to help the innocent people in need.

But, I would have to say that I would love to read minds. Or possibly become invisible… that would be interesting. There are so many to choose from, you could almost make up your own, I suppose.

Healing would be cool, but a lot of responsability.
I really like all of your books , each series and trilogy. I’ve read almost all of your work, the only book I am yet to finish reading is “Forbidden Game:The kill” and so far is amazing

One thing I’ve been wondering for some weeks now is Did Charles (Solstice series) ever saw Elwyn again?

I really enjoy reading your books, My favorite characters from the begining were Bonnie, Damon, Poppy, James and Ash, but I have to admit that right now I am really in love with Charles and Stefan.

Also Does Damon see Bonnie as something more than a whim?

almost forgot Nick Armstrong is such an amazing character I have a friend at schoolwho is CRAZY about him, she almost kills us everytime we say he is the most amazing character ever

  5. Tiffany says:

Thats so sweet of you! Though with that much power would come great responsiblity. Then it might be too much, but helping people is the way to.

  6. Brittney says:

I would have to agree with you 100% about the healing. I would love to have the ability to heal all the people in the world that have a serious life threatening illness or a severe injury. My brother was in a 4-wheeler accident a few years ago and he broke his neck. He has gotten better but is no longer the same as he was. I would give anything to be able to heal him…
I guess the healing would come at a price though because you’d never be able to save everyone and the choose would be terribly hard to make.

On a brighter note, just wanted to let you know that I love your books and I can not wait for Shadow Souls. When will the first chapter become available?

    Hi L. J.!

I would have to say my superpower would be to be able to morph into different animals. Like a cougar, owl, even spiders (<- arachnophobia!) to see how they work and communicate to each other.

You have inspired me to write my own stories and poems. I am currently writing a book I am calling "Winged" about a main girl who loses her memory and in a love triangle between a witch and a chosen one. It was based on I dream that I had, it had Cassie, Diana and Adam in it. Evidently they were witches (<3).

I am 15 right now and I started to read your books when I was 14, I have already read vamp. Diaries, Secret Circle, Night of the Solstice, Night world, and dark Visions. I'm just really sad that I can not get your other series. I have already ordered Heart of Valor and Strange Fate! I just can't wait until next year!

Leaving this comment just feels so surreal to me. You are my TOP role-model out of three, and one of them isn't even real :P (You, Batman, and Christopher Orapello) I have made it one of my life goals to meet you in person, I just hope I get to actually do it. I live in Canada…

Anyways, this has probably gone on too long :D Have a nice day/ night :D :D
    - Amanda <3 (sorry if any of this came out twice, I posted it then I don't think it posted online, idk)

    Hi Lisa,

I think healing powers would be amazing but you, in a way, already have them through your books. [It may not be the healing of a physical cut but sometimes the emotional wounds are the ones that need the most healing.] There are countless numbers of girls you’ve helped through bad life situations, low self-esteem and loneliness. I know because I’m one of them. I’m 26 now and I started reading your books when I was about 13. Getting lost in your world helped me through some hard times but also helped me believe in myself. So thank you.

Also, you’re stronger than you think. It’s not the same as having physical super strength but you’ve got an army of devoted fans behind you. That in itself is a strength that you can draw from when you need to boost yourself up. I’m proud to be part of the Smith/Night World Army >:]

Just to let you know Night World is a beautiful piece of work and I cannot seriouly wait for Strange Fate to come out!!(Just ask my mom jk) Thank you for writing all of your books and not quiting!! Proud to be your fan!! ~ Lisa H.

  11. Jennifer says:

  12. Jennifer says:

Your like really my number one author i adore your books wish i could own them all but own the ones a can lol. And im so glad your marvellous book VAMPIRE DIARIES has boon made into a tv show yay.

  13. Dee says:

Healing is a great power indeed. If I had to choose, I would pick either supernatural strength or telekinesis, but as they say, with great power comes great responsibility. If I had either of those, I would try to make the world a much better place.

  14. gita says:

    hey,
LJSmith, I wanted to know are you going to make a conclusion in STRANGE FATE about the characters who don’t want to become immortal? And their immortal counterpart, because in the end they’ll die if they refuse becoming eg. vampires.

Also, will you pick up from the last scene were the Overseer changes his taste in women and picks Brionwy?

    Thanks. Cheers.
    - gita
p.s. the mood in your books are is a lot darker! I like it. But I hope there are no sex scenes, since YAs are reading these. Meyer made a huge mistake by including Sex Scenes & Abortion … etc.

  15. Mel says:

    Hey,
I liki your answers! If only that was possible! You’ll just have to make what Damon used on Elena in the last book! lol! I would like to have super strength too! I can be very wimpy also, mentaly and physically.
But if everyone one was healed than what would happen to all those inspirational stories of those amazing people? That makes the it alot harder I think. But I guess I would have to say I wouldn’t want to be a healer then. We need those amazing people to look at and say “hey, they can do it, so can I!” You just have to look at things from multiple point of views!
But I do wish it was always that simple to be a healer helping people like that!
